"Welcome Back Hotter: Paul Anthony Stewart" -- 8/24/99

"It's never as good as the first time," so a popular song goes. Not true. In fact, if you scan the ranks of daytime, you'll find lots of actors who have had success on soaps, but left the genre and came back -- either to the same show or a different one -- to great acclaim. Get the lowdown on 10 performers who reveal the secrets of their many happy returns.

Guiding Light ... The Returnee: Paul Anthony Stewart
Who He's Playing: Danny Santos

Previous Soap Address: Loving, where from 1992-1995, he played Casey Bowman, an ex-cocaine addict who tried to redeem himself by working with the cops to bring down the head of Corinth's drug ring. Instead, he ended up dead.

What Makes This Return Special: Stewart, who was popular on Loving, became a fan favorite in record time on GL as a young mobster seeking revenge on his brother's killer, Michelle. Danny won Michelle's (Joie Lenz) heart. Ditto those of GL viewers. His subsequent romance with Michelle turned into GL's first successful supercouple in years (fans rarely blinked when Michelle dumped hunky Jesse for the gangster), and put the show on the radar screen with teen viewers.

The Way He Sees It: "When this opportunity came up, it was really interesting and different from the last role I played on daytime," says Stewart. "I'm having a fantastic time. It's a cool profession -- where else do you get to be a mobster? It's great to be working with [Head Writers] Barbara [Esensten] and Jim [Harmon Brown] again because we only got to work together for a few months on Loving before I left, and they wrote soem really fantastic stuff for Casey's exit. I love that Danny is unpredictable and hot-tempered, but he can also be very romantic.
