In my opinion, whenever Michelle is this close to him he shuts down and reacts in pain. At first I didn't understand, wouldn't Danny want to know how Michelle "really" feels for him? But I understand why Danny is reacting this way. Yes, he can be this tough and cold mobster, but when it comes to Michelle all his defenses are lowered. Danny is protecting his heart, he doesn't want to be hurt. This man has done a lot for Michelle. He saved her life, and in the process, fell in love with her.
In Manny's marriage, he thought he had it all fiqured out. In my opinion, Danny knew that someday this day would come. Yes, he probably hoped that Michelle would someday come to love him but he was prepared to lose her ... one way or the other.
Fastforward to the present, Danny lets Michele go. He loves her too much to see her scared and vulnerable. But that description also applies to Danny, in a different way. As I said earlier, I don't think that Danny wants to face the truth. Every time Michelle gets close, Danny shuts down or turns his face. When they went to sign the annullment papers, he couldn't wait to leave that table. Danny doesn't trust himself around Michelle. Is he afraid of what she may see?
Danny loves Michelle with all his heart and soul, but I don't think he can face the heartache of losing Michelle again. That's why he's keeping her at a distance to protect himself and her. Deep down Danny must know that Michelle feels something for him, but he's afraid of what those feeling might be. I just find it very interesting that Danny is the one whose feelings are like a open book. But the smart man in Danny isn't fooling anybody but the right person -- Michelle ... but not for long.
