Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Santos The Rustle of the Sheets . . .
Essay #56
"Highwire"

By Rhonda -- posted on the Mannyac Board.

I can see where Danny and Michelle are both coming from. Michelle has never been much of a risk taker, and being with Danny is like performing a high wire act without a net. If she falls, her injuries will be severe and she may not recover. Being with Jesse, is like performing on a practice wire a few feet off the ground. If she falls, her injuries will be minor and she will recover. Michelle's problem right now is that she wants Danny and his high wire act (I think she's reaching the desperate longing stage), but she also wants an absolute guarantee that she will be safe.

Danny has done everything he can to insure Michelle safety (he even installed a safety net when he took Carmen's ledger), and he has demonstrated his willingess to risk his own life to protect hers, but he's still on a high wire and life with him will always be dangerous.

On the other hand, Danny has been walking the high wire practically since birth. He understands the dangers and knows how to compensate, but until Michelle came along he was performing solo and had never experienced the joy of sharing his wire with a partner. After working with Michelle for a short time, he is so convinced that she is the perfect partner for him that he misses the terror in her eyes until she panics and knocks him off the wire in a mad dash for safety.

Danny survives, but he's still in a lot of pain, and he has no intention of ever getting up on that wire with Michelle again. Lucky for us that he's no more willing to perform solo than Michelle is to let him, but Michelle is going to have to do most of the work this time, and she's going to have climb back up on that wire all by herself.
