Essay #58
"Michelle's Idea of Marriage -- 'Tis a Puzzlement"

By Liz M -- posted on the Mannyac Board.

I think I was almost as confused as Danny when Michelle kept insisting to him yesterday that yes, indeed, they did have a "real" marriage.

Excuse me, Michelle, Sweetie, speaking to you now, as your kindly Aunt Liz, marriage -- as it has evolved in the Western World, at least -- is something that involves a commitment between two people. To be sure, Danny made his vows in good faith -- he said he meant every word of them -- and yes, it's obvious that the man is in agony over setting you free and absolutely tortured by the sight of you and Jesse together.

But you, Michelle ... you never, ever wanted this marriage, not even when you said those vows before God. Don't get me wrong ... I understand exactly why you did it -- you were frightened and deservedly so. Who among us would have done differently? (Okay, ladies, we all wouldn't have turned a certain someone down ... but I digress.) You only agreed to be married in that religious ceremony to fool everyone into thinking you were really making a commitment. You absolutely never intended to be a wife to Danny and without that intent, even the Catholic Church doesn't call it a marriage.

And, though I don't like to point this out at a time when you're so obviously hurting, Sweetie, you didn't even let the guy get to second base. In fact, dare I say it -- most guys do better on a second date.

So, I have to ask you ... exactly what was it about your time with Danny that qualified as a marriage? Exactly what made it real? Aunt Lizzie would really like some answers ....
