Michelle changes her mind at the last minute, to protect Danny, but it's too late. The F.B.I. already has sprung into action. Danny is devastated when he discovers his wife betrayed him.
"It makes him take a look at what he has done, not only to himself, but also to his family," head writer James Harmon Brown says. "He was brought up in this family to be a certain thing. He's fallen in love with this girl, even though he has a hard time admitting it to anybody, particularly his mother. And what he is seeing is that every time he gives Michelle the opportunity to do the right thing, and make him believe that she is willing to go through with this, to learn to return his feelings, she has betrayed him. So now he is at a point where he is pondering his options. He could always go back to the original option (to kill Michelle), which is what Carmen wants.
"That is going to be his dilemma. What do I do? How do I get out of this without doing what I was orginally sent to do? How can I trust her? How can I keep her in the house? At this point the pot is definitely boiling with the two of them."
