Essay #63
"Drew is Nothing Like Danny, Certainly Not Where It Counts: Character"

By kristi -- posted on the Mannyac Board.

But, now something new has been added to the mix! Danny and Drew! Man, these two people might as well be from another planet! Danny and Drew are like two peas in a pod. They are both very smart, honest (even though you don't want to hear what they have to say about certain things), aggressive (they go after what they want, no holds barred -- namely Michelle and Jesse -- I give them both points for that), streetwise, tough, dangerous, and they take no crap from people.

Drew's honest? When did Drew show signs of honesty? When she squealed to Danny about Michelle, conveniently leaving out her part in Mick's death and getting Michelle almost killed? (Sure, she regretted it later, but what else is new?) When she denied prior knowledge of Michelle's betrayal? When she keeps mum about Michelle's feelings for Danny even when she pretends to know how much he's in pain? (Did anyone else want to smack her when she said "I know you're just like me?" The audacity ...) And I'm just citing what's coming to mind right now.

Smart? Business smart, maybe. Never bought her as a club's owner, though. (Her employees obey her because she's the boss and writes their paychecks, not necessarily because they respect her business savvy or respect her plain and simple.) The girl, however, does not know the meaning of "thinking things through," a true sign of smarts for me.

Aggressive? Reactive would be more like it. If she was really aggressive in the true sense of the word, she'd take charge of her own life (like Michelle did) and stop relating herself to Michelle, who's more aggressive a la Scarlett O'Hara ("Tomorrow's another day") than Drew has ever been.

Streetwise? I wanna laugh every time she pretends to be this worldly, know-it-all person, when she has had about as much life experience as Michelle's had, getting spoiled endlessly by her daddy. Unless she thinks sexual experience gives her an "advantage." (Is this the thinking of a mature person?)

Tough? She has failed every single test of adversity ever since she came to the show, lashing out at everyone around her (we're talking about friends too, not just enemies) every time someone dares hurting her. I don't know what TPTB were going for when they were paralleling her finding about her adoption with Manny and Holly, but I couldn't help noticing how disproportionate the situations were in terms of adversity.

Manny were battling a potentially life/death situation with their break-up and Holly mental insanity and a possible prison sentence, but what was Drew battling? "They lied to me!" The world as she knows has ended, her life is a lie and her parents who loved her like no one else are no longer her parents because they dared lie to her. (Will someone please smack that girl on the head?)

Dangerous? In a Dennis the Menace way, yes, I'd say she's dangerous.

Danny and Drew may seem to have similar character traits on the surface, but look deeper: she doesn't have half the character that he does. Which is why he never gave her much attention. In his eyes, she wasn't worth much. In terms of character strength, Michelle's more Danny's match than Drew could ever hope to be. Manny are as much alike as they're different, which is why they challenge and are a match for each other, not Danny and Drew. Drew has too much growing up to do to be Danny's match.
