"The True 'Never Been Done on Daytime'"

By Analee

Guiding Light has finally (keep your fingers crossed) done, and is doing, the true "never been done on daytime" story. That is creating a couple, allowing them to be happy, and maintaining viewer interest. Exploring the intimacies of a married couple has a wealth of story possibilities. Why haven't they figured this one out? Didn't Mad About You run on this concept alone for years? Even the old I Love Lucy show had this as its basic premise.

Guiding Light has, at times, played with this idea with other couples, but, of course, Manny is the real thing. Soaps have often told us how a marriage falls apart, but not how a good one works. Heck, if marriage weren't interesting, fulfilling, and fun, why would so many of us stick with it? Normally, on daytime, we see our favorite couple in a lavish wedding, only to have them disappear to the back burner or to serve as a prop for other stories. With Manny and Josh/Reva I see Guiding Light moving away from this this. Let's hope so.

Manny captivates us with the every day nothings which make up our lives. The small talk in the bedroom after a day apart, the phone calls just to hear your lover's voice, the misunderstandings, the arguments, the making up, the sex, the sex, that "pretty good old bed" oops sorry.

I adored the towel scene last week. It was fantastic. I truly believe that when they rehearsed that scene, Paul Anthony Stewart did NOT remove the towel in the way he did when it was filmed. I think he does that to Joie Lenz every now and then and I love her confusion and how she covers. Who wouldn't want to look like Lenz and have her husband come in and tell her she is wearing his favorite outfit and why is there a towel covering it up? Need ice here.

Think about the connection they have that they can talk about sex in the middle of Josh's living room while the rest of the Springfield Rescue Rangers are planning the raid. (Check out Cassie's expression in the background.)

Manny captured my heart with their love story, but their marriage leaves me begging for more.
