Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Santos The Rustle of the Sheets . . .
Essay #204
"Danny, The Mob and Catholicism"
"(The Birth Control Episode)

By LALady18

I am Catholic (who doesn't necessarily believe in the Church's position on BC) and I have often wondered how mob figures can do the things they do and still think they are religous and good Catholics. In my opinion, they are able to separate their "business" lives from their personal lives. They seem to think that what they do in conducting "business" has no connection with their family lives or Catholicism. And, it appears, in many cases that the Church does seem to close its eyes to the things that are going on. Maybe the Church feels that as long as they can "close their eyes" that possibly some soul might be saved.

I just don't know. But, it does seem that mob families as portrayed are extremely religous, but just do not let it interfere with their business. In Danny's case I can see the conflicting emotions. He does not want to be outside the law, remember he told his mother they were entering the 21st century and should do away with contracts, revenge, illigitimate businesses, etc. He also told his mother that he could be ruthless but that it had to be within the law. He is religous, remember how he goes to a priest to help resolve issues because the priests know how the family does business. He is trying to resolve the conflict within himself of how the business actually operates and how he can justify these actions with his beliefs.

In my humble opinion, I think that religion will win because basically he is "the good Santos" and that is what has drawn Danny & Michelle to each other, they recognize the goodness in each and thus are able to reach out for the "connection" that is there, not just the sexual aspect but the connection of souls.
