Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Santos The Rustle of the Sheets . . .
Essay #181
"Companion FF Guide to Last Week (July 19 to July 23) ...

by Kristie

... or how I can watch one week of Guiding Light in under two hours. Okay so shoot me, but Im actually enjoying the show as a whole again. A few of the usual missteps notwithstanding (Drew/Jesse, Annie Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, etc.) I remain hopeful that GL, and in particular Manny is moving in the right direction again. After watching all 5 hours, I think that theres probably 1 to 2 hours worth of viewing material.

Monday the 19th

  • Richards uniform scares me. He looks like a perfectly coiffed member of the SS. Am also wondering why, if Reva is so desperate to get beyond those ginormous gilded bas relief doors, that she doesnt take that big old medal around his neck, twist it and choke him rendering him unconscious so that she can flee the palace? That lethal letter opener she pulled on him wont do much but help her pop the buttons off of his German army surplus coat. Also, if you watch the first and last Richeva scenes you catch the gist of whats going on ... lots of repetition again. Basically Reva is Katherine, but then weve known that for about three months now ... so no biggie here.

  • Go ahead and FF through all of the Spaulding mansion scenes where the 1999 Dysfunctional Family of the Year medal winners discuss that dynamic duos disappearance Annie Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Essentially Beth blames everyone for Lizzies disappearance but herself. Nothing new here either.

  • Okay on to the really good stuff ... Manny! Warning -- these scenes should not be watched by anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, or a pregnant woman. May I just say that they are back! Dont know if someone different wrote this scene or if Joie Lenz and Paul Anthony Stewart winged most of it, but may I just say that Monday is definite Manny REW / FF material? In fact, Im not sure how some of it made it past the daytime censors, but am singing praises that it did. I wont go into great detail here because Jennifer H. already did an amazing recap of these scenes [well, gee thanks!], but they are beyond smokin.

Had to rewind four times to make certain that I was SEEING his hands all over her rear end, and they werent just on her bum, they were ALL OVER her bum. Not to mention we got our usual ration of chest kisses, neck kisses (from both of them) and then there was this very sexy little hip to hip suggestive dance kind of thing they did on their way to the couch. I cant really describe it but all I can say is: damn! Also, must mention that the way in which Danny kept looking Michelle over had me feeling like a Gladys Kravitz spying on my neighbors doing it in the living room. (Oh and I wont mention the hands right below her uh, ah, her um, chest.) So suffice to say that youll probably spend at least half an hour FF/REW on these scenes. This is the kind of honeymoon stuff weve been clamoring for and we finally got it. I just hope that GL can pick up the viewers they lost along the way to this day.

  • Oh yeah, Danny said San Cristobel is an Island ... so that question is settled.

    Tuesday the 20th

Okay, you can pretty much FF to Wednesday.

    Wednesday the 21st

  • Why are Drew and Michelle chatting? Why did they hug? When did they patch up their "friendship?" Why did Michelle buy Drew a gift? Why is Michelle happy for them? Why is Michelle within 100 yards of that apartment? Did Michelle forget that her husband and Drew slept together not but four months ago? Why do they need to be friends? How did we get from point A to point D? Do the writers think that we think that years have elapsed since March? Why? Why? Why? I wont go on about this given the fabulous thread that discussed this madness in great detail and depth, but to put it bluntly ... this bites the big one.

  • Like the Josh and Danny scenes. Would somebody in the writing department please give Danny boy at least one true friend and a confidante?

  • Lizzie while youre saying your prayers honey, pray for your parents to get a clue. Oh yeah, and can you also pray for Vicky to get locked up in that attic with Grandma Santos, Eleni, Marina, Meta, Shayne, and Harleys dog? I dont mean to be cruel, but the way that Vicky is written ... shes completely expendable.

    Thursday the 22nd

  • Non-Manny but I suppose worth mentioning. We have been given the crux of Davids motive for taking down the Santoses. They forced his Dad to buy cheap medical equipment, thus causing him a stroke. Huh?

Just skip everything else and get to the really meaty stuff ... Manny! Allright, now Im really wondering if the stronger writers are back at the helm here. Not only did we see more passion, but there was actual meaningful discussion. There was an attempt to discuss their issues, their was a mini-tiff, and there were sparks aplenty. I dont want to jinx us, but could it be? Could we be getting back on track?

Ive thoroughly loved the honeymoon stuff, honestly I have, but for me everything between the shower scenes until the honeymoon was, Im sorry to say, rather sloppy and vapid. Its as if the story was tossed to someone who felt it wasnt worth their time and attention and was created while watching Must See TV and muching on chips and dip. Not this week, and to be fair, not the honeymoon either. Maybe somebody higher up started paying attention again ... at least lets hope so given that we are one of the few groups who actually seem to sing the writers praises.

Oh how I have missed the Casa Santos bedroom. I love this place. For me it is where the dance began, the circling, the fussing, the fighting, the passion began to bubble to the surface. Happy as a clam that were back in this bedroom. So, is it just me or does Joie Lenz seem to drive these scenes? Dont get me wrong, I am a big Paul Anthony Stewart fan, but really my favorite scenes are when Lenz is in the drivers seat.

No one is perfect 100% of the time, but this little lady is fine, fine, fine. Watch her reactions when Danny/Stewart tells her he has to go, watch her reactions after she sees his suitcase. These two are back in rhythm and sync and I am getting back that feeling that I had when first watching them. I love it when she is playing the little nymph with Danny and she does it again here. The wonderful difference of course is that this time, she has the genuine feelings behind her actions. I also love watching Stay-Puff Danny succumbing to her charms.

Pay close attention to tthe setup of the scenes ... when they are going back and forth about his leaving, they are standing in the same positions they did when they argued in that bedroom so long ago. Shes by the fireplace, hes close to the foot of the bed. Anyone remember the "family is an entity" argument or the scenes when he is struggling with "taking her out?" I love revisiting these scenes and feelings.

Then in the last scene when Danny comes back and he cant lie to her anymore, theyre in the same locale that they were the night of their 2nd wedding when Danny interrupts Michelles conversation with the FBI dude. His heart was open to her then, and it is on Thursdays show. Were weaving and layering and revisiting again. "Would have made a pact with the devil," he says. Isnt this oddly reminiscent of his words that night "Ill protect you with my life." So are we getting back on to that Ferris Wheel, on that roller coaster, on that bumpy ride (feel free to insert your own metaphor)?

Rewatch the last bed scene when Danny is almost pleading to Michelle to believe him, and he snaps at her that hes not doing anything illegal. She shushes him and kisses him and tells him she trusts him. Although the underlying layer is different here, the scene is much the same, the tension the angst are much the same, and it seems to me that Manny are back in their groove ... I am cautiously optimistic here.

Could it be that now the Blake/Ross, Buzz/Selena, and Rick/Abby writing have been strengthened, TPTB are realizing that they fumbled when they sent Manny to No Mans Land? Heaving a big sigh, nodding my head, and hoping.

By the by, FF to the scene where they are kissing right before Danny leaves for the first time. Shes pressing against him and he has his hands under her robe and all over her backside. Hmmmmm. Positively gets me goofy.

    Friday the 23rd

  • Who knew that Danny could fly jets? -- except of course that the spoiler tipped us off, but well pretend we didnt know. Top Gun Maverick Danny Santos flying Josh Lewis to rescue his beloved Katreva from the evil clutches of that coiffed, hunky Prince Richard. Goodness but I like that mans hair ... its pretty. Umm gentlemen rescuers, where exactly was Reva going to sit in that two-seater after you get her past those massive gilded doors, attacked Edmund with the lethal letter opener, scaled the Palace walls, and made it back to the airstrip -- on Joshs lap? Also, shouldnt you take that bigger than lifesize portrait of Katreva? Im thinking it would look pretty good over the mantle of the Lewis home.

  • FF through the parts where Katreva reads letters. Weve done this scene already. Oh and Richard honey, I really think that you should drop this whole search for baby boy Jonathan. Reva has a tough time remembering her eldest son Dylan, and she knows where he is. She doesnt have a good track record in remembering the people shes birthed.

  • Skip the scenes containing any of the following: Holly, Blake, Cassie, Frank, Springfields finest, and the engagement crud. Been there, done that. Nothing new to report other than Cassie is getting her tractor repossessed.

  • Well, well, well, Carmen and Edmund in bed together, figuratively of course. Although perhaps they should try it literally because the Carmen/Ben stuff makes me wince. Im getting intrigued.

There you have it folks. The highlights and lowlights. I vow to think positively from here on in. If TPTB will stay back on track with Manny, speed up the San Cristobel stuff, bring on more Blake and Ross and Phillip and Harley, ditch the Drew/Jesse religion stuff, because quite frankly, I dont think this is the couple to pull off this story, and send Vicky into the witness protection program, Im singing praises again.

Great, great Manny week ... I dont care that they were on only two days. Give me quality and complexity like this twice a week, and Ill be buying more Tide and Dawn to show my thanks. Kristie
