The Rustle of the Sheets . . .
Essay #142
"Into the Woods/Woulds ..."
By elle
Returning to overanalysis. You know, I've been trying to analyze why
Danny and Michelle are going to the woods (does Danny really strike
anyone as the mountain man type, and how will Michelle go hiking in
that short skirt and heels), and it finally hit me, that I had
forgotten a totally brilliant post, I think by Melissa again, which
compared the Manny storyline to the Sondheim/Lapine musical, "Into
the Woods." (I have been Sondheimless too long. Everyone sighs.)
They're going into the woods/woulds. What they would have done, what
they wished for (a friend of mine who was in a production of ITW
swore that if he ever heard the opening, "I wish" or the "Into the
Woods" theme one more time, it would be too soon).
And the issue of Carmen the Witch has resurfaced. The question of
Carmen reclaiming her beauty, I think more than one poster has
commented on Carmen looking, younger, more beautiful, lately, as the
Witch does in the course of ITW. Will Carmen also lose her power(s)
as the Witch does when she reclaims her sexuality?
It's also playing into the fairy tale aspect of Danny and Michelle,
the white knight rescuing the captive/sleeping princess, to go the
woods (Snow White/Sleeping Beauty anyone?)
