"Bad Boys We Love" -- 8/3/99

In the beginning, there was General Hospital's Luke, the ultimate dangerous liason for innocent Laura. Even though viewers knew that Laura was better suited to her nice husband Scotty, neither she nor fans could resist the chemistry that comes from flirting with danger. The result? A supercouple of immeasurable magnitude. Luke's anti-hero with a soft heart persona set the stage for a myriad of lovable villains who have the same Achilles heel: the love of a woman. In the world of soaps, bad boys are the forbidden lovers who can be redeemed (for a while, anyway).

Danny Santos, Guiding Light

A lot of credit for Danny Santos' universal appeal has to be given to Paul Anthony Stewart, whose sensitive portrayal of the young mobster is bringing women of all ages to their knees. Even before Michelle fell in love with Danny, we were drawn in by his soulful eyes; we could feel his torment at being rejected by a woman he desired so badly.

Now that Danny and Michelle are a couple, we can swoon along with Michelle over every romantic proclamation he makes, get lost in the intensity of his feelings and easily forget his flaws -- even if they include the ability to snuff out lives in the name of business. After all, a guy has to make a living, doesn't he?

* Note: Just gotta comment ... Soap Opera Update featured eight "bad boys" and Paul Anthony Stewart was the only actor mentioned ... all of the other anti-hero write-ups dealt with only the way the charater was written. But, PAS (and again, he was the only ACTOR whose name was even mentioned) got "a lot" of the credit for Danny. I just thought that was cool!
