Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Santos The Rustle of the Sheets . . .
Essay #27
"Goodbye"

And with that one simple word, Danny and Michelle's relationship was forever altered. The deal was off, Danny would no longer play the role of Michelle's husband, they would no longer live their lives in some warped reality. The deal was off, and the pseudo-marriage over. And yet the love story has just begun.

The music, the kiss and final embrace, the poignant goodbye, and Danny leaving Michelle crying clutching his wedding ring ... what is so important or special about this scene? It was real, it was two people saying goodbye to someone they deeply cared about. It was the end of a real relationship. The irony of the situation is that Manny weren't suppose to be real, the end should have been easy.

Yet I'm betting it was one of the hardest things either of them had ever done. There is something very real between Michelle and Danny, something that can't be destroyed or diminished by one little word. In fact by saying goodbye to their fake marriage, to lies, to the false expectations Michelle and Danny just may have cleared the path for a "hello" to love.
