I expected loads of romance, and from all of the posts it sounded as if that is exactly what was delivered : loads of romance. None of the details I read worried me about the way the scenes were done (i.e., the rope, plus Tinkerbell music) or Danny and Michelle's chemistry or lack thereof. So, I don't really have much pre-commentary to make about "Freaky Friday," this covers it. Expect much longer commentary on "Manny Monday."
May I just start out with . . . WOW!
Again, WOW!
I loved, in every sense of the word, Danny and Michelle's latest nuptials ... but, there were a few things I could have done without or would have changed (and they all are from the last scene), so let's get these out of the way and list them first, shall we?
1. Okay, the Tinkerbell chimes were a bit much. As big a romantic sap as I am, even I had to roll my eyes a tad bit at that, but after everything that came before it, I was willing to indulge their whimsy.
2. Knowing that we ain't getting an actual love scene on Monday, we should have seen more kissage on the bed, not much more, but at least thirty seconds or so more. Okay, a minute or so more.
3. This was Danny and Michelle's REAL wedding. They are arguably GL's hottest couple (some might still say Josh and Reva). They are also arguably the hottest couple on daytime (not just one of, mind you, but the hottest). They should have closed the show. Period. No ifs, and, or buts. Guiding Light screwed up there. Big time. That steamed me.
Okay, now some gripes/comments people had and my responses to them.
1. The cheesy music . . . I thought Tracee had a point when she mentioned that Michelle herself had said "cheesy music," but after watching it, I have a different opinion. Remember, although this was Michelle's fantasy, Danny picked the music. As much as we love the guy, he is, after all, just a guy. And a guy who has admittedly never done anything romantic before this girl came into his life.
So he picked music that he thought a female would find romantic: soft, sweet, flowing music. And no, it wasn't what I would have picked (and I gathered, not many of you would have as well), but I thought it was so sweet, knowing that Danny - junior gangster that he is - took the time to try and pick some romantic music for his beloved.
2. Ray and his bible . . . True, he only said two things and therefore really didn't need the bible to read from, but I think that it was there (as it is in all weddings) as a symbol of God's blessing. I'm sure that after repeating those words so many times, most priests have the whole shebang memorized.
3. Michelle's vows vs. Danny's vows: Sure, Michelle probably had lovely vows all written and memorized for the ceremony at the church ... but that was five days earlier and what happened in the interim. A bombing. A forced visitation in the psych ward by her big bro. Sedation. Michelle did not know that she and Danny were going to Laurel Falls to get married. Why would she have remembered word for word vows she had composed days before and logically had not looked at since the morning before the first (third?) attempted wedding?
So, of course she stumbled over words, she had long pauses and her vows were not as beautiful and poetic as Danny's were. The original vows she composed were probably a heck of a lot more romantic; what she spoke here were just snippets. Still, they were great snippets and spoken from the heart.
Danny, on the other hand, had prepared this wedding down to the smallest detail. I can just see him pacing back and forth -- while Michelle slept -- memorizing his vows so that they slid like honey off of his lips when the time came to recite them. And they did.
4. The rope & bed: The rope was obviously a guy idea of a nifty way to surprise the girl (Plus, it brought back a cute memory of Michelle's drunken "what's behind door number 2?"). And her reaction and how she pulled the rope were terrific. The bed was romantic in just about every way. The sheets, the roses, the set-up ... this all took a lot of effort on Danny's part and his love for his bride was radiant in every detail (even the corny ones.)
5. Michelle's less-than-pristine feet: I'm not absolutely positive, but I'm pretty sure that she was wearing sheer nylons ... so once those nylons came off, her feet wouldn't have been that dirty (I still wouldn't have recommended any toe-sucking on Danny's part, though.)
6. Danny's bad-boy persona out the window: Where, oh, where, did ANYONE get this notion? Just because he was lovey-dovey with his wife and became her Knight in Shining Armor for the day? Two days before the guy deliberately lied in the face of another's man fearful panic over his missing wife. Yeah, Rick deserved it, but still, it was cold and Danny would have easily made Rick suffer much, much more had Abby not called it off.
This is the guy who was all sweetie-pie with Michelle before their church wedding and what happened after the bomb? As he held her in his arms he vowed with steel in his voice, "I'm gonna kill whoever did this." And coming from a Santos, that was not an idle threat. Is Danny not allowed to be a sweet, love-struck sap with the woman he loves? Just because the guy adores his wife doesn't mean he is now a paragon of virtue who has shed every undesirable trait and instinct. Not by a long shot.
Alrighty, now the fun part ... What I loved and I'm talking oodles of adoration here. This was as close to perfection as I've ever seen a soap get a wedding before (their first (second) nuptials would be a close second.). This wedding, the set-up, the arrangement, everything was romantic and fantastic, and best of all, so wonderfully in character, especially for our Danny Boy.
He adores Michelle. He wants everything to be perfect for her and make up for the dangers he's exposed her to, so what does he do? He goes back to a wonderful, simpler time where she was nothing but an untroubled, romantic dreamer and gives her a fantasy from that time. Of course, being Danny, he has to be in complete control of every aspect of HER fantasy.
Note how he made her recount it. Why did he have her do that? For two reasons, I think. 1.) To make sure he got everything right, and 2.) To remind Michelle what she wanted so that she couldn't possibly miss just how "amazing" he is.
I also loved how the entire show followed through with his control-freak nature (we all know how BIG on control Daniel Santos is). It was there in the painstaking attention he paid to every detail -- the way he stopped the ceremony to get the bouquet of daisies, the meticulous way he handled the music (the pursed lips, the determined expression to get this perfect) both times. This was sooo Danny.
Other comments on all I loved about "Freaky Friday" . . . First, a wardrobe note: Paul Anthony Stewart looked so fabulous in that rich, royal blue shade and Joie Lenz looked lovely in that white dress.
In general, Danny's continued need to see Michelle's reaction to every one of his surprises. The almost constant physical connection between the two, the many sweet, soft kisses and the adoring way they gazed at each other constantly.
In particular ... the way he put his hands around her waist and held her against him. The way her arms were wrapped about his arms, one reaching up to caress his neck and face. (Boy, do these two just love being touchy-feely with the other one's neck or what?)
Danny's excited and reverent display of their wedding bands. I swear, I started to tear up when I saw those rings because I had not read how they showed up. Michelle's "you're amazing," followed by Danny's "I know" and then her quiet, smiling "you do." The way she lightly ran the daisy over his cheek and throat at one point.
The determined look on Danny's face as he searched for the bouquet of daisies. Michelle's smile and the loose, casual way she threw the one daisy she was still holding over her shoulder. The tears that began to shimmer in Michelle's eyes when Danny slipped her wedding ring back on her finger. Danny's vows, especially the repetition of her name as if savoring her presence in his life. The way they echoed his original ones - "You are a treasure to be cherished and revered." Here he said, "You are a treasure and I promise that I will treasure you always," confirming what he had known then.
The look on Michelle's face when he expressed the desire to make her proud of him as her husband and how that look said that she WAS ALREADY proud to call him her husband. Her teary reaction during the recitation of his vows.
The playful way she swiped at his arm with her bouquet (he must have done something that was out of the camera's view - and I don't mind that I don't know what he did because it just added to the overall feeling of the intimacy in their interactions. They never seemed like a couple of actors in front of a camera. They were just a young couple in love.) The close of his vows, "you are my life," an exact rephrasing of Michelle's words when she convinced him to let her stay with him right after the bomb scare.
The wedding kiss. The way he had his arms wrapped about her, his hands wrapped about the back of her neck, his fingers entwined within her hair. Her hair. Yes, I would have preferred the curls, but at least it wasn't perfectly straightened and there were nice, loose waves there.
The way Danny said Mrs. Santos (one of the few times we've actually heard Michelle referred to as such). The utterly cornball, cliched way they drank from the champagne glasses and the look in both of their eyes that seemed aware of the silliness of it, but they still did it because it was sweet and romantic and what a newly-wed, completely in love couple would do.
The determined look on his face when he once again returned to the music and set it up. Totally Danny in making sure everything was perfect. The way he asked her to dance. The utter eroticism of the dance itself -- the way her breasts were pressed against his chest and their hips were swaying in tandem, their hands caressing each other through their clothing. The way Danny buried his face in her hair, and took a sniff of the scent. The way Michelle was on her tippy-toes. The overhead shot of the dance.
While we heard the Manny theme, presumably their music had finished playing and still they kept swaying as if dancing to the music in their hearts. . The butterfly kisses all across her face. The languorous look of satisfaction on Michelle's face. The tender, yet seductive way Danny pulled her strap down. The shoulder kisses.
The incredible first close-up kiss when they were dancing. I actually thought to myself, their lips fit so perfectly together.
Danny's smile when he announced one more surprise. The way he held tightly onto her hand as he led her towards the edge of the rock. The way he lifted her up and set her onto the ground next to him. The knowing look on his face when he handed her the rope. Michelle's grinning reaction as she pulled on it. Her quick grab and pull of Danny's hand to that bed and near-moaning "oh" followed by her laugh-filled "oh" when he swept her up in his arms. The perfect tableau of this beautiful couple lying on sheets of satin in the middle of a floral paradise.
I sat through all of their scenes with the biggest smile on my face. I sighed, I grinned, hell I even giggled at the sheer joy of watching them interact a time or two.
Again, I absolutely LOVED "Freaky Friday."
